Kyzeflo / The AEO Playbook
Ranking isn't enough.Get cited.
How ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI decide which businesses to recommend — and the exact steps to become one of them.
TL;DR: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business the source AI assistants quote and recommend. It sits on top of SEO, not instead of it: a fast, crawlable website, answer-first content, proof that you're trustworthy, and consistent mentions of you across the web.

Kyzeflo / The shift
Where did the clicks go?
Buyers increasingly get their answer before they ever reach a website. Instead of ten links to compare, an AI gives them a short list of names — and if yours isn't on it, you weren't considered.
Ten blue links
Someone searches "best interior designer in Bengaluru". They get ads, a map pack and ten websites. They open four tabs, compare portfolios and reviews, and shortlist two. Ranking on page one meant you were in the running.
- The buyer does the research
- Your website does the persuading
- Position 1–10 = a fair shot
One answer, three names
The same person asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Mode. They get a summary that names three firms, says why each one is good, and links a couple of sources. The research is done for them. Most never click through to compare.
- The AI does the research
- Third-party sources do the persuading
- Named or invisible — there is no page two
Visibility moved upstream
Your traffic report can look fine while you quietly lose deals. The decision is now made inside the answer. If a competitor is named and you aren't, the buyer arrives at their door already convinced — and you never see the lost lead in your analytics.
"If you're not in the answer, you're not in the deal."
A straight word on AI stats
Kyzeflo / Fit
Is this playbook for you?
It's for businesses whose customers research before they buy — services, real estate, finance, D2C and B2B. If nobody compares options in your market, AEO matters less.
This is for you if:
- Your customers compare options before they contact anyone
- You already have a website and some reviews, but AI assistants don't mention you
- You sell something with a meaningful price: a service, a property, a product people research
- A competitor keeps coming up when people ask AI about your category
- You want a channel that compounds instead of one you rent with ad spend
This isn't for you if:
- You want results this week (this is a 3–6 month game)
- You don't have a real website yet — start there first
- You want to "do AEO" while skipping SEO entirely (it won't work — see next section)
- You're hoping for a trick or a hack to game the models
Kyzeflo / The stack
Is AEO a replacement for SEO? No. It's a layer on top.
AEO is built on two layers below it: a solid website and solid SEO. AI assistants find, read and trust pages largely the same way search engines do — so if the foundation is weak, no amount of AI optimisation will fix it.
A website machines can read
Fast pages, clean semantic HTML, content that exists in the page source rather than appearing only after JavaScript runs, a sitemap, and no accidental blocks on crawlers. If a crawler can't read your page quickly, it can't quote it.
- Loads fast on mobile
- Real text in the HTML, not trapped in images or scripts
- Clear structure: one H1, logical H2s, descriptive titles
Being findable at all
AI assistants that search the web lean heavily on existing search results and well-linked, well-regarded pages. Good content, sensible keywords, links from other sites and a healthy Google Business Profile still matter — they're the entry ticket.
- Pages targeting what buyers actually ask
- Links and mentions from relevant sites
- Google Business Profile with real reviews (for local businesses)
Being the answer
This is the new part: structuring content so the answer is easy to lift, proving you're credible with specifics, adding schema so machines understand who you are, and making sure the sites AI trusts mention you.
- Answer-first pages (the answer in the opening lines)
- Specific proof: years, clients, results, awards
- Schema markup, llms.txt, consistent business details everywhere
"AEO without SEO is a roof without walls."
Kyzeflo / The framework
What does it take to get cited?
We use a four-part framework called CITE: be Crawlable, give Instant answers, be Trusted, and be Everywhere your buyers' AI looks. Miss one and the other three work much harder.
Tap a letter.
C: Crawlable
AI systems can only quote what they can fetch and read. That means fast pages, content present in the HTML, AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt, and a clean sitemap. This is the least glamorous pillar and the most common reason businesses are invisible.
"You can't be quoted if you can't be read."
I: Instant answers
Put the direct answer at the top of every important page — ideally within the first couple of sentences, and definitely within the first 200 words. Then expand. Models pull clean, self-contained statements; long wind-ups get skipped.
"Answer first. Explain second."
T: Trusted
Generic claims like "we're the best" mean nothing to a model. Specifics do: years in business, number of clients served, named results, awards, certifications, real reviews linked from your pages. Most businesses already have this proof — they just never publish it.
"Proof you already have, published where machines can see it."
E: Everywhere
AI answers lean on third-party sources: directories, review platforms, industry lists, press, forums. If those sites mention your competitors and not you, the AI will too. Your name, services and location should be consistent everywhere they appear.
"The internet has to agree that you exist."
Kyzeflo / Anatomy
What does an AI answer actually look like?
A buyer asks one question and gets a short list of named businesses with reasons and sources. Notice what earns a mention: specific proof, reviews, and being listed on sites the AI already trusts.
- You asked:
Who are the best real estate agencies in Dubai Marina for first-time buyers?
- ChatGPT answered:
Here are three agencies that come up consistently for first-time buyers in Dubai Marina:
- Harbour & Key Realty — 12 years in the Marina, with a dedicated first-time buyer guide and 400+ reviews averaging 4.8.
- BlueDoor Homes — known for transparent fee breakdowns and mortgage pre-approval support.
- Marina Nest Properties — smaller team, strong reviews for off-plan advice.

- You asked:
Who are the best real estate agencies in Dubai Marina for first-time buyers?
- Gemini answered:
Popular options include BlueDoor Homes, frequently praised for explaining fees and DLD charges upfront, and Harbour & Key Realty, which publishes detailed guides on buying in the Marina. Check recent reviews and confirm RERA registration before signing.

- You asked:
Who are the best real estate agencies in Dubai Marina for first-time buyers?
- Perplexity answered:
Based on reviews and agency guides, top picks are Harbour & Key Realty (12 years, 400+ reviews), Marina Nest Properties (off-plan specialists) and BlueDoor Homes (transparent fees). Harbour & Key's buyer guide answers most first-timer questions directly.

- You asked:
Who are the best real estate agencies in Dubai Marina for first-time buyers?
- Google AI Mode answered:
For first-time buyers, agencies often recommended in Dubai Marina include Harbour & Key Realty and BlueDoor Homes. Both have strong reviews and publish guides covering fees, mortgages and the buying process.
- 1harbourandkey.example/first-time-buyers
- 2maps listing
Harbour & Key appears in all four answers. Not because it's the biggest agency — because it published a specific, answer-first buyer guide, put numbers on its experience, and is listed on the review sites the engines check. That is AEO.
Illustrative example. Businesses and sources are fictional. Real answers vary by engine, location, settings and day.
Kyzeflo / Signals
Why does an AI pick one business over another?
Models favour sources that are easy to read, specific, corroborated by other sites and consistent. These six signals cover most of what separates the businesses that get named from those that don't.

How do I write answer-first?
Open every key page with one or two sentences that fully answer the question, using specifics. These five fill-in-the-blank openers cover the pages that matter most. Copy them.
Service page
The direct answer
"[Company] provides [service] for [type of customer] in [location]. Since [year], we've [specific result, e.g. completed 300+ projects / served 120 clients], with [proof point: rating, award, certification]."
Example
"Harbour & Key Realty helps first-time buyers purchase property in Dubai Marina. Since 2014, we've closed 900+ sales, with a 4.8-star average across 400 reviews."
Location page
The local answer
"Looking for [service] in [area]? [Company] has served [area] for [X years], working with [number] [customers] from [nearby areas]. [One specific differentiator]."
Example
"Looking for a CA firm in Koramangala? Mehta & Co. has served Bengaluru startups for 11 years, filing for 250+ companies, with fixed monthly fees and no surprise charges."
Comparison page
The honest versus
"[Option A] is better for [situation]; [Option B] is better for [situation]. The main difference is [one-sentence difference]. If you [condition], choose [option]."
Example
"Shopify is better for brands that want to launch fast; a custom build is better once you need complex workflows. The main difference is control versus speed."
FAQ answer
The quotable FAQ
"Question: [exact question buyers ask]. Answer: [one-sentence direct answer with a number or specific]. [One or two sentences of supporting detail.]"
Example
"How long does a CRM implementation take? Most take 4–8 weeks. Simple setups with clean data can go live in two; migrations from legacy systems take longer."
Pricing page
The price answer
"[Service] typically costs [range] for [type of customer]. The price depends on [2–3 factors]. Most of our clients pay [typical figure] for [typical scope]."
Example
"A brand identity typically costs $2,000–$8,000 for a small business. Price depends on scope, number of deliverables and revision rounds."

Are you visible right now? Find out in 30 minutes.
Ask the major AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, with web search switched on, and record who gets named and which pages are cited. Ten well-chosen prompts give you an honest snapshot.
Write 10 prompts your buyers would actually type.
Mix them: 3 service + location ("best [service] in [city]"), 2 problem-based ("how do I [problem you solve]"), 2 comparison ("[you] vs [competitor]" or "[option A] or [option B]"), 2 informational ("how much does [service] cost"), and 1 branded ("is [your company] any good?"). Don't pick only easy ones — that just flatters your score.
Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
Turn web search on where it's optional. Use a fresh or logged-out session if you can, so your history doesn't bias the answer.
Record three things per answer:
were you named (yes/no), who was named instead, and which URLs were cited.
Tally it up.
Your citation rate is how many of the answers named you. Compare it with the competitor named most often.
Look at the cited sources, not just the names.
If the same directories, review sites or articles keep appearing, those are the places you need to be listed or mentioned.
Check your own analytics.
In Google Analytics, look for referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar. In Search Console, find which pages already get impressions — those are your fastest pages to improve.
Expect variation.
Answers change with location, settings and day. Run the same set monthly and watch the trend, not a single result.

What is AI invisibility costing you?
A rough way to size the problem: estimate how many of your potential buyers now start with AI, and what those missed enquiries are worth. Drag the sliders.
How it adds up

A directional estimate, not a forecast. It assumes that if you're not named in AI answers, you miss a share of buyers roughly equal to how many start their research with AI. Your real number depends on your market, competitors and how often you're already cited.
Kyzeflo / The plan
What does the first 90 days look like?
Month one fixes the foundation, month two rewrites key pages and publishes proof, month three builds off-site mentions and measures. Expect early signals in 60–90 days and treat six months as the real baseline.
Fix the foundation
Run the audit. Fix speed, crawlability and structure. Add Organization, Service and FAQ schema. Publish llms.txt. Clean up your business details everywhere. Set up an AI-referral channel in Google Analytics so you can measure from day one.
- Audit baseline
- Technical fixes
- Schema + llms.txt
- Tracking
Become the answer
Use Search Console to find the pages already getting impressions. Rewrite their openings answer-first. Add the proof you've never published: years, client counts, results, awards. Build FAQ sections from real customer questions. Add comparison and pricing pages.
- Answer-first rewrites
- Proof on every key page
- FAQ + comparison content
Get the web to vouch for you
Get listed on the directories and review sites your audit showed the AIs cite. Ask happy clients for reviews. Pitch one or two industry articles or lists. Re-run your prompt set and compare against your baseline.
- Directory listings
- Review push
- Mentions
- Re-audit
Compound it
AEO compounds like SEO. Track the same prompts monthly, expand from 10 to 30+ prompts, publish one answer-first page a week, and keep adding proof as you earn it. The businesses that start now will be the defaults a year from now.
"Day 1 is a fix. Month 6 is a moat."
Kyzeflo / Questions
Questions people ask us
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making your business the source AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features quote and recommend. It's also called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AI SEO.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. The foundations are the same — a fast, crawlable site and good content. AEO adds answer-first writing, specific proof, schema, and off-site mentions so AI systems can confidently name you.
Can I do AEO without SEO?
Not effectively. AI assistants that search the web rely heavily on the same signals search engines use. Skipping SEO usually means AEO work has nothing to stand on.
How long does AEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show up within weeks. Most businesses see early signals in 60–90 days and should judge results over about six months, because citations build as content and mentions accumulate.
Which AI platform matters most?
It depends on your buyers. ChatGPT has the largest dedicated audience, while Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode reach the most people inside search. Measure all the major ones — the work that helps one usually helps the others.
What is llms.txt?
A plain-text file at the root of your site that summarises your business and links your key pages for AI systems. It's an emerging convention, not a guarantee — but it's cheap to add.
How do I know if AI is sending me traffic?
Check Google Analytics referrals for domains like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, ideally grouped into their own channel. Remember that a lot of AI influence shows up later as direct or branded traffic.
Can you guarantee we'll be cited?
No one honestly can. Answers vary by engine, location and day. What you can do is make your business the easiest, most credible answer available — and measure the trend.
